His tactics have hoisted Mazda's residual values to the top of the industry, passing Subaru and Honda as the No. 1 brand for retained value. The Mazda3 compact, the brand's volume leader, holds a hefty 59 percent of its value after 36 months, while the mid-sized Mazda6 retains 55 percent, according to Automotive Lease Guide's midyear calculations. On July 1, Johnston was named vice president of strategic planning and market integration.
